2007 Hospital Hero Award Recipient

John D. Gelin, MD

Family Medicine

Citrus Primary Care

Citrus Memorial Health System

“Dr. John Gelin always says he is going to consult a ‘real’ doctor or ‘ologist,’ as in cardiologist, or pulmonologist, etc., but he, himself, is an excellent non-ologist.  I have a tremendous respect for the man and the physician, for all the lives he has touched, and for all the good work he has done over the last 35 years,” says Dennis Walker, MD, of Citrus Cardiology, Inverness, Florida.

This quote sums up the epitome of Dr. John Gelin.  His quiet way of working through his day, caring for his patients, working behind the scenes for the last 35 years in Citrus County, not only in medicine but throughout our community.  He seeks no acclaim.  He sees a need and quietly fills it, no questions asked from this humble man of medicine who has touched so many.

Dr. Gelin’s legacy began in Citrus County back in the early days of 1972, when he came on the medical staff of Citrus Memorial.  Since that time, you can ask almost anyone, and they will have heard of Dr. Gelin.  Not only is he a doctor, he is a legend, a gem who continues to reign over the hearts of those he comes into contact with.  This modest man of medicine has changed the way we look at healthcare.  To Dr. Gelin, “it’s the people that count.”

One of his legendary, traditional treats occurs very year on Ground Hog Day Dr. Gelin’s favorite day of the year.  He delivers cake and punch to every department of the hospital and gives out small gifts and trinkets to all, spreading cheer in the hope that Spring will arrive soon.

“Dr. Gelin has total commitment to his patients and to his staff.”  This quote can be heard from just about anyone you ask about Dr. Gelin.  This commitment even extends to his daughter, Julie Sudduth, DO, who practices family medicine as well.

Currently practicing at both Citrus Primary Care of Floral City, and Citrus Primary Care in Bushnell, both part of Citrus Memorial Health System, Dr. Gelin’s list of accomplishments go far beyond medicine and caring for his patients, although he would never tell you about either.

Dr. Gelin is presently the acting medical director for Hospice of Citrus County.  From 1979 to 1997, he was the Citrus/Marion Jail physician and Associate Medical Examiner from 1972 to 1994.  He has also been the on-call physician for several nursing home facilities since 1972.

When it comes to kids, Dr. Gelin has always been up front and center.  He has been the Citrus High School Sports team doctor for 35 years, including providing free sports physicals since 1972.  He is a past board member of Little League of Citrus County and has been a Little League umpire since 1972.  Dr. Gelin coached softball and soccer from 1991 to 2003, and coached two softball teams to the State Finals in 1997 and 1998.  Dr. Gelin has also sponsored teams for Citrus Soccer since 1985.  Dr. Gelin is an annual contributor of the Citrus County Future Farmers of America steer and swine programs.

Dr. Gelin has been a member of the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce and is a past board member.  He received the Distinguished Citizen for Community Service from the Chamber in 1978.  He is past president of the local Rotary Club where he was a member from 1976 to 1985 and received a Paul Harris Fellow, a prestigious “service above self” award, in 1992.  He has been a host parent/family for International students from 1996 to 2005 and was an International Sponsor for “Compassionate Friends.”

Dr. Gelin currently is involved with the Florida Medical Association of Youth Service and has been since 1990.  He is also an active supporter of various medical organizations, i.e., Hospice, Continuity of Care Council, and medical scholarships, just to name a few.  He is a member of the Florida Medical Association, the Citrus County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Practice.

For 35 years, Dr. Gelin has given of himself to his practice, his patients, his staff, the kids of Citrus County, and all those whom he has come into contact with.  It is with this in mind, we, of Citrus Memorial Health System, wish to nominate Dr. John Gelin for the FHA Hospital Hero Award.
